How much does a surf lesson cost in Santa Cruz?+
Group lessons run $85–110 per person for two hours including a board and wetsuit. Private lessons jump to $150–200. Most schools pad the price by 10–15% in summer; the off-season (Oct–Mar) is when locals buy lessons for visiting friends.
What's the best beach for beginners?+
Cowell's Beach, hands down. The break is gentle, the bottom is sand, and the wave breaks slow enough that you have time to think. Pleasure Point is intermediate-only; the rocks at low tide are not your friend.
When is the best time of year to learn?+
September. The water is at its warmest (about 60°F), the summer crowds are gone, and the swell is consistent but not overhead. Bring a 4/3 wetsuit; you'll still want it.
Do I need to know how to swim?+
Yes. Every school requires you to be a confident ocean swimmer — not pool laps, ocean. If you've never been past your knees in surf, do a paddle-only session first.
Are wetsuits and boards included?+
Almost always, yes. Confirm when you book — a few of the cheaper deals on the booking platforms are lessons-only.
